The Infidel's Rant

I've been reading Through a Glass, Darkly (Harpers.org) all morning. Reminds me why I like Harpers so much. Why I adore any snotty, intellectual sort of fare. And yes, I think Harpers is snobby in the VERY best sort of way.

[rant]
The way I am. Ugh, how silly that such a word should be so maligned! This trend, in this stinking country, where the lowest common denominator is held up and revered as the standard...I don't understand it. I can't. Why must we all mumble and club our speech so that any uneducated moron can understand us? Why must we make things easy of the slowest and least useful? Any why, oh GRACIOUS why, in every place I've ever been to, is it terrible to be smart and sharp and well spoken and to have a curiosity and a hunger for more information, more knowledge, more learning? Oh, it's not 'useful'. Pardon me, seems to the me the obsessive collection of knowledge is one of the only things that ever *is*. I read a book once that said "A King does not win the batter, his advisers do." Then again, that's open to interpretation. [/rant]

You know, I've said in the past that making fun of Christan Fundamentalists is a little silly. (before anyone gets up set; it's fundies I have a problem with, not Christians. There's a difference.) A little too easy. It's like shooting retarded fish in a very small pail. But after reading that article I'm changing my mind. YES, one IS allowed to change one's mind, you know! An army? A jihadist force to stand against and conquer the secular infidels? Yes, so much of what they say is anti-intuitive, even ridiculous. Yes, laughable.

Then WHY do so many fall to it? There must be something....yes, I think there's something now, something that goes beyond the smug confidence of being on the (currently) victorious team. I don't know what it is, but I think it scares me. I think any creature that proffers up it's will scares me. Not a universal wrong, but very very very very wrong to this muffin here.
